“All Power to the Factory Outlets” – Burberry Propaganda Tour Summer 2013<\/h4>\n

Estonia – Latvia – Russia – Lithuania – Poland – East Germany<\/span><\/h4>\n

    In 2010, British artist Merlin Carpenter exhibited thirty-seven pictures at the Miami gallery Formalist Sidewalk Poetry Club. <\/i><\/span>Each was a piece of fake Burberry check textile stretched on a large wooden frame. Shipped in a container to Tallinn in May 2013, <\/span>they remained on show at Temnikova & Kasela gallery through June.<\/span>When the show ends in Tallinn, the artist returns to Estonia to pack up these works in a van and take them on a tour around Eastern Europe. <\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

Carpenter re-stages the mission undertaken by Leon Trotsky during the Russian Civil War. <\/span>Trotsky’s armoured Propaganda Train travelled to the many fronts on which the Red Army fought the Whites and was equipped <\/span>with artillery, telegraph, printing press, and elite fighters.<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

Equipped with only luxury branded artworks and a smile, the Propaganda Van will <\/span>move through the former Soviet Bloc from Tartu, Vana-Kasep\u00e4\u00e4, Hiiumaa and Narva in Estonia; Riga and Jurmala in Latvia; <\/span>further to Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia; Vilnius, Lithuania; Warsaw, Poland; ending up in Berlin, former GDR. <\/span>With quick stop-offs organised in these and other locations\u2014whether a top-notch institution or forest glade\u2014the tour will proceed <\/span>from place to place promoting the Burberry paintings to local inhabitants.<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

 The van will arrive in 10 July 2013 for a one night presentation from 6pm to 9 pm. All are welcome.<\/i><\/h4>\n

Merlin Carpenter drove an empty van from London to Porto last year as an art piece.<\/span>His recent solo shows include \u201cPOLICE\u201d at d\u00e9pendance, Brussels (2013); \u201cfunky house\u201d at Limazulu, London (2012); <\/span>\u201cTATE CAF\u00c9\u201d at Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York (2012), and Simon Lee Gallery, London (2011). \u201eHeroes\u201c at MD72, Berlin (2011); <\/span><\/i>and a show at Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles (2011).<\/i><\/span><\/h4>\n
